HIPPA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Enacted in 1996, this U.S. federal law was introduced to help reform the health-care industry by reducing costs and simplifying the administrative processes & burdens. Another key element of HIPPA was to protect the privacy and security of patients' health information. Revised in 2009 with the ARRA/HITECH Act and again in 2013 with the Omnibus Rule, HIPPA mandates that covered entities, including health plans, health-care clearinghouses, and most health-care providers, should not make use of or disclose individuals’ health information in any which way except as defined in the law for treatment, payment and healthcare operations. Business associates also fall under the HIPAA regulations and are required to provide HIPAA training to staff members at the time of initial hiring. Also, refresher training to staff members on an annual basis is emphasized so that they can understand the HIPAA requirements for protecting patient health information.
